Leonie King and Sioban Piercy are the founding members of 'imPRESSions'. Both are consummated practitioners and have championed printmaking as an exciting art medium since the early 1980's. They met when they were both lecturing in the Art and Design Department in what was then Galway Regional Technical College (later to become the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology). Their love of Printmaking was their motivation to try to promote a greater awareness of its qualities and potential to wider audience and have organised well over twenty five Printmaking exhibitions.
Leonie King
Leonie King has been a lecturer in printmaking and an organiser of print exhibitions in Galway such as ‘Western Artists’ and ‘Akin’ and founder of Impressions Print Biennial. Her work is in many private and public collections.
Since college Leonie King has travelled extensively. She has spent time in South America, India and Morocco. Foreign images and colours are brought home and blended with those of the Irish landscape: its patterns and textures and mists.
An awareness of the past transparently overlaid on the present is part of the underlying notion of her work and pertains to the sense of eternity, stretching both backwards and forwards. Her work is an endless balancing of dynamics, of coloured texture over variant coloured texture.
Her inspiration comes from an interacting of the emotional with reflections of the surrounding area, both present and past. The effervescent colour changes of the sea and land transpose themselves into multi-layered prints that are responses to a communing with soil, rock, and that which ekes out an existence on it, and underneath the surface of the earth

Sioban Piercy
Sioban Piercy uses the the customary materials and practices of book binding to create sculptural objects of delicate balance.
Along with book-making methods, she employs the array of graphic conventions which are traditionally used in books to give tangible form to abstract concepts: maps, linear diagrams, tonal descriptions. letter forms. What emerges is the product of many procedures; an ink drawing is processed and manipulated through a digital programme, a photograph is reworked by hand, then further transformed by a print process, and finally waxed, folded, and bound into a three-dimensional structure.
For Piercy, the book is a liminal space where the physical and sensual become signifiers for our endeavours of self-interpretation: a site where ink marks on paper embody our efforts to construct meaning. She sees the book as a system of physical and psychological tensions that operate across the boundaries of materiality and mentality to create an architecture of self-identity.
She studied at the Royal College of Art, London and has received numerous awards including the International Print Triennial in Cracow, Poland; the Printmakers Council of Britain, London; British School at Rome scholarship. Her work is in the collections of the Arts Council of Ireland, the Ashmolean, Oxford; the Instituto Nationale Per la Grafica, Rome; among others. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Printmakers (RE) and winner of the society’s residency at the Scuola di Grafica in Venice in 2019. She is a regular exhibitor in the Summer Show at the Royal Academy. London.
