Cork Printmakers is a professional print studio and resource organisation based in Cork City, providing artists with facilities and equipment to create artwork through the medium of print. Our purpose is to support and promote the creation and development of new artwork through our studios, residencies, exhibitions and events programme, promoting the highest standards of practice in printmaking. Cork Printmakers currently has 100 members working with traditional printmaking, as well as experimental and newly emerging techniques Through our exhibitions, we show the work of our members as well as presenting work by other contemporary artists working in printmaking. Cork Printmakers has an in-house studio gallery, as well as an off-site exhibition space, The Print Gallery, at Nano Nagle Place, Cork City. We regularly partner with other organisations and community groups on projects, exhibitions and events. 2021 sees Cork Printmakers become part of the first Europe-wide Studios of Sanctuary programme, through the Creative Europe-funded project In From the Margins. This will offer opportunities for 30 artists from refugee and migrant backgrounds to take up supported residencies in print studios at Cork Printmakers and its partners: Edinburgh Printmakers, Scotland; AGA Lab, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Funen Printmaking Studio, Odense, Denmark; and the International Centre of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenia. At the heart of our education and projects programme is a focus on cultural expression, inclusion, diversity and accessibility. We support the professional development of artists with our programme of talks and classes and in securing funding and artists’ supports. Through our graduate bursary awards, we ensure the next generation of printmaking artists are encouraged in making new work and continuing their practice as printmakers.

Sandra Pyka
Sandra Pyka is a recent graduate of MTU Crawford College of Art and Design and recipient of Cork Printmakers Graduate Bursary Award 2020/2021. Pyka was born in Poland and moved to Ireland when she was 9 years old. With this experience of economic migration, the idea of many forms travel has highly influenced the research within her artwork. The artist states: “My work allows me to embrace the concept of "going back where I came from", the ideology of the journey and experiencing the feeling of being 'in transit'. I wish to create scenarios of emotions I went through as I acclimatized to the idea of travel. I also wish to reach out to people who feel that they are 'in-transit' or 'in-limbo' - with images of the one place that reminds me of coming home, which is the airport.” Sandra Pyka works mostly with with screen print to engulf the viewer with an erratic visual energy as it juxtaposes negative but important memories of travel with vibrant, vivid colours.

"I have been making work as a professional Artist for the past twenty years since I graduated with a Masters in Art From MTU Crawford Art College. I also teach Printmaking at CSN College of Further Education and work as a Free Lance Art consultant for the Dean Hotel Group. I have been a member of Cork Printmakers since 1996. My work is collected by the The National Gallery of Ireland, The OPW, Port of Cork, Cork Opera House and most recently was acquired by the Crawford Art Gallery as part of the National Collection. I am a vigorous advocate for printmaking as a vital and important form of creative and social expression. My visual practise investigates the interplay between landscape and self. Personal mythologies collide with the concept of the ‘Thin place’, the blurred space between the physical and spiritual realms. In Irish folklore the stories around such places help to put a shape on the unexplainable, now more than ever. In the last twelve months there has been a mass revisiting of custom and belief systems. Understanding the true meaning of place has become a step towards reconnecting with and re-evaluating our identities. This connection involves a temporal tethering of past, present and future histories. Through my work I looks at how we bring our internal and external worlds together and how this becomes translated into ordinary life. My work is primarily lens based with outcomes in in both printmaking and sculptural forms."
